Georgia Marie Gitch, 79, of Sumner, died Sunday, December 10, 2017, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 14, 2017, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. Lynn Groe officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 13th, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Thursday. Memorials may be made in her name to St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner or to the family for later designation.
Georgia Marie, daughter of Rudolph and Marie (Weidler) Mikes, was born February 22, 1938, near Fredericksburg on the family farm. She received her education in the Fredericksburg Schools and graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1956. While in high school, Georgia excelled in music and basketball. Upon her graduation, she received her teaching certificate from Wartburg College and would later receive her Bachelor’s Degree. Georgia taught for a year at Monona before being united in marriage with Jerry Gitch on August 2, 1959, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg. She would continue her teaching career at Fredericksburg before finishing her career at Tripoli. Georgia was a long time member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner, where she was an active member of the church choir, which she loved. She also enjoyed various crafts including sewing and stamping, spending time in Minnesota at Lake Kabetogama, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Georgia is survived by her husband, Jerry of Sumner, daughter, Kelly (Rick) Gardner of Muscatine; four grandchildren, Tanner (Lauren) Gardner of Muscatine, Molly (Alex Laban) Gardner of Cascade, Nolan (Emily) Gitch of Waukee, and Lauren Gitch of Polk City; one great-grandchild, Kinsley Jensen; and one sister, Barb (Harold) Diemer of Hawkeye.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Stuart; one sister, Darlene; her father-in-law, Alvin Gitch; and mother-in-law, Beth Gitch.
